National Marathon

March 25 saw two debuts in Washington D.C., and they were in conjunction with each other. The inaugural National Marathon took place. The event was the brainchild of Keith Dowling. The second was the marathon debut of Deep Six Racing member, Scott Munro, in the National Marathon. Scott finished in sixth place in a time of 2:43.36. Vic Flemming, a former Nittany Lion teammate of Scott's, finished in third place in a time of 2:36:51. An excellent showing for the both of them. I have included Scott's account of the race below. Also there are some pictures of him finishing and with Vic after the race.

Full Results

Scott's take on the performance:

"It wasn't that bad, actually. I think I did a good job of gauging what type of shape I was in. I slowed down a lot over the last 10k, but I didn't hit the wall. I went out with Vic for the first few miles and then backed off of his pace. Then I was stuck out in no man's land running 6:00 pace. I slowed down a little and this guy caught up to me at 7 or 8 miles and we ran together through 16. It was so nice to have somebody in the middle of the race. The front guys were 2+ minutes in front of us and the next guys were 2+ minutes behind us. I held close from 16-20 and then my legs started to give way. I trained the best that I could, but I will definitely need to do more long runs if I want to run another marathon. I was also not ready for the hills. The last 6 miles were all up and down. The map is deceiving. Overall, it was a good race. Keith did a good job. The course went through some bad areas of DC and Prince George's county, so I was happy to come out alive. Hopefully they will make the course more like Marine Corps in the future. There weren't many good guys in the race, so I was able to win $100."

"Vic ran a tough race as well. He does most of his runs during the week on the treadmill before work and at lunch. I don't know how he gets himself in that type of shape with his training. Well, he has run a few marathons before and he did some good long runs on the weekend, so he knew what he was doing. "

"Megan ran well also. Her knee has been bothering her so her training the last few months hasn't been as hard as she wanted. She was on pace to qualify for Boston until the last few miles. I'll probably run one with her this fall to help her get qualified."

Evening Workouts

There is something about working out at night. Not sure what it is. You just feel faster I guess. But it also gives you an edge. It is the same as working out in the early morning hours and when it is freezing cold. Generally you are the only one out there making yourself better when you could be sleeping, watching TV, or doing a myriad of other things. Below I take a look at three recent workouts at night, two of which I actually ran at as well.

March 17
I am at the Alumni Council Dinner, and I receive a text message. It is Artie seeing if I am available because he is going to do a workout. As is typical when Artie calls me to go running, I am either eating or just finish eating. Not that I am in shape to do a full workout with him, but more there to run a few of the intervals. The workout is 5 sets of 4x400 with 100m minute recovery between runs and a lap jog between sets. It was quite cold this evening and very windy, which means extremely windy if you are at the Penn State Outdoor Track. Artie did a great job in the workout. It was quite an impressive display. And what a great way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. And for verification the workout was completed before midnight by a few minutes so it is still credited to Friday.

March 24
So a week passes, and here we are again, I am eating a roast beef wrap, and Artie is calling about doing a workout. I figured this would workout well, because I wanted to do a mini-fitness test to see where I was at in my training. Tonight's workout is scheduled to be 10x1000m. This one was starting at 8:40 p.m., so we would not be in danger of crossing over days. I arrive to the track later than I expect to, but I bring my flats in tow. After I warm-up, I do parts (400,600,400,600) of the last four intervals with Artie. It went ok. And it was still cold, but not as windy as the week before. It felt good to run hard again and workout on the track. Artie once again had another great workout and exceeded his expectations.

March 27
So here we are again, but this time I am prepared. And I plan to eat a little something after practice to sustain me for the night's workout. On Monday the plan was 4-mile tempo on the track + 2x600m (I ended up doing 4x300m). So for this one I decided I would just do the whole thing at my pace and it would give me a solid idea of where I was at. My pacing was off a bit, but I only had one bad lap. It was first lap of the last mile, ironically, Artie's slowest lap was the same one. The weather was quite nice, somewhere between 40-50 degrees, but relatively no wind. I was pleased with my workout. I was able to do what I had hoped to, so that was a good sign. Artie said his workout went much better than last Monday. He said he ran faster than the previous Monday with less effort, which is always a good sign.

So what's next you ask? On Friday, the legendary Michigan workout is scheduled. It is 1600-tempo mile-1200-tempo mile-800-tempo-400(all out). I am not sure what my plan is for this one, but I will keep you posted. It should be a good one. Artie is pleased with his preparation for his upcoming 2006 outdoor season debut. He will be racing the 10k at the Penn Relays. As for my debut? Well there has been some talk of running the Coaches vs. Cancer 5k next weekend. We will see.

World XC Preview

The 2006 World Cross Country Championships are upon us. They take place this weekend in Fukuoka, Japan. From what has been said, the course is relatively as flat as a pancake. The United States has several strong teams aiming for individual and team medals. The combination of an excellent staff and team should produce some great results. The strongest of the bunch is probably the men's 4k team. They have an excellent chance of earning team medal and securing some top-10 finishes. Below are previews for all of the races.

Tussey Mountain Run

So it is Saturday afternoon, and I am supposed to meet Artie for a run in Tussey Mountain. We were heading up Laurel Run Road to the fire tower and add on distance if need be. He was doing his long run (18-20 miles), and I was going to do a segment of it, since I had already run in the morning. Then the phone rang. It was none other than Gregg "Greggtone" Davis. He wanted to go for a run as well. I told him the plan was to do about an hour with Artie. He said it would be perfect because that is his weekly mileage. An hour every week, which is two fast 30 minute runs. True to form, Davis did not disappoint and he got in his mileage for the week. Davis is still a very impressive runner. I still remember his 8:14/14:44 double at the Big Ten Indoor Championship. It was a great time for all three of us to catch up on everything and reminisce on old stories. It was a great run, but they generally always are when you run with great friends.

Davis is doing well and prepping for his May 20th wedding to Lydia Stephenson. He is still doing lens cutting using advanced geometry and residing in Pittsburgh.

Running in the mountains

Lawrence, Donnie, Bailee, and I went for a run in Tussey Mountain. It has been a long time since I had done those trails. Bailee and I were in Shingletown Gap a few weeks ago, and ran into Tussey onto the hard roads. But it has been a while since I had hit the trails. Also, it has been a while since I had run with Lawrence. His shin is doing better, just going through some minor aches and pains. So he needs to be careful with it, and get on soft surfaces as much as he can. So he does not have another injury.

As we were running I couldn't believe how many trees were down from the high winds. Also I couldn't believe the development I was seeing, there seemed to be more stone driveways and cleared out areas. Also, there were two fenced off areas on both sides of the trail. Not sure if they were to keep people out of them for safety or for development. Let's hope for safety.

But the coolest thing yesterday was when it started raining on the run. It sounded as if a wave was crashing down the mountain. You could hear the roar of the water as it made its way to us. It was amazing. I was just waiting for it to reach us. I always enjoy running in the rain, it always makes me feel free. So all in all it was good to be back in the mountains, and I will not wait this long again to make my return.

High School Nationals

Well the High School National meets concluded on Sunday. It was a great weekend of meets. At the Nike Indoor National meet, the crowd was treated with several record setting performances. Including Francena McCorory's record run in the 400m dash. She ran 51.93, to break Sanya Richards' record of 52.10. It was an amazing race to see.

Rick Koubek ran a new PR in the 2 mile of 10:12.39. He attacked the race and went out with the leaders, but he wasn't able to hold the pace the whole way through. But soon he will be able to as long as he continues to take chances and races outside of his comfort zone.

Katherine Ward ran 5:16.54 in the mile. She lead for the first half of the race, setting a very good pace. The pack got away from her a bit on laps five and six, but she was able to regroup on the last two laps for a strong finish. Coach Donaghue continues to do an excellent job for her troops. They will do big things this outdoor season. She will be taking an army to the state meet.

State College boys 4x800 team ran 8:12.06 at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships. It was not as fast as there 8:01 at states, but a great segue heading into the outdoor season. With their continued improvement, they should be able to break the 7:50 barrier. We will be watching.

The indoor season has concluded, and we are now making way for the showcase, outdoor. It will be an exciting spring with many fast times from the high schoolers and the local elite. I will keep everyone posted as best I can. Good Luck to all athletes in the upcoming season.

Big League Racing Update

Well the weekend is off to a great start. Two top five finishes by Rebecca Donaghue and James Carney has set the standards for the young guns, Rick Koubek, Katherine Ward, and the State College 4x8.

Rebecca was 3rd at the NACAC Championships and lead her team to victory. She was the first American finisher. She finished 12 seconds behind the winner Megan Metcalfe of Canada. Team USA scored 18 for the victory, second place Canada finished with 37 points. Congratulations Rebecca on your great race.

James Carney finished in fifth place at the USA 15k Championships. He said it was very hot and humid down in Jacksonville Florida. With 800m to go he was with Alan Culpepper who finished in fourth place, but he didn't have that one more gear he needed to continue to move up. Excellent race James, congratulations.

There will be more to come in just a few hours. Next up is Rick Koubek in the two-mile run at Nike Indoor Nationals.

Two great reads

Two great pieces for everyone. One is an article on Craig Forys, the Colts Neck, New Jersey star who is going after the Nike Indoor National 2-mile title. He is also running the mile leg of the distance medley relay at the National Scholastic Indoor Championship. It should be an interesting weekend for him. I guess after the DMR he will head to Maryland to begin is final preparation for the 2-mile.

The other is an interview with Bob Kennedy conducted by Steve Holman. Kennedy talks about why he ran, his retirement, and his future plans.

The paths we take

We were up in Rec Hall for the workout today, and the great Brandon Eck was there. He was decked out in his Villanova Track and Field apparel. He is definitely "Main Line" material. And we got to talking about what some of his Juggernaut classmates were doing now. And it was interesting as to the different paths they have taken.

Brandon Eck: He is attending Villanova University and majoring in Biology and Track and Field. He established an indoor personal record of 1:57.0, and has his sights set on making Junior Nationals, the qualifying standard in the 800 is 1:53.04.

David Hopey: He took a semester off of school to repair trails out west. It was his calling. He is also making bows as well. I have never known anyone to be more at home in the wilderness than him.

Andy Mazur: He is touring the midwest and informing people about the "Invisible Children" of Uganda. He was born to be an activist.

All three are runners, and all three have different passions and their hearts are leading them to pursue their dreams in ways few people ever do.

I am very proud of all of them. I will give updates on their progress as I receive them.

Big League Racing Weekend

Wow! Very rarely are there so many high caliber events happening at the same time. But what makes it even more special is that we have local athletes in just about all of them. I will do my best to cover all of the events, and will provide on-site coverage to the Nike Indoor National meet. Steve Petrosky will be bringing his troops there as well for several relays and a few individual events. Steve and I were high school teammates, and he was instrumental in getting the St. Francis program to where it is today. He was apart of their first big recruiting class that including Brian Quinn (Lawrence's older and wiser brother) as well. Listed below are the athletes with local connections and where they will be competing. Oh and there is a rumor floating around that the legendary Scott Munro will be on hand at the Nike Indoor National meet to introduce himself to his fellow Deep Six teammates and cheer them on. What a star-studded weekend lineup. I am glad to be along for the ride.

James Carney: US 15k Road Championships held at Jacksonville, FL in collaboration with the Gate River Run. James was fourth last year in 44:17 and looks to improve on his time and finish. James will be looking to win his first US title.

Rebecca Donaghue: NACAC Cross Country Championships held in Cleremont, FL. Rebecca earned the berth for the championship from her eighth place finish at the USA Cross Country Championships. Rebecca will be gunning for the NACAC title as a team and individual.

Rick Koubek: Nike Indoor Nationals held in Landover, MD. Rick will be running the two mile at the championships. Rick will be shooting for a sub-9:37 for the race.

Katherine Ward: Nike Indoor Nationals held in Landover, MD. Katherine will be running the mile at the championships. Katherine will be shooting for a sub-5:05 for the race.

State College 4x8(Peter Wandell, Josh Gainer, Matt Groves, Paul Kernfeld): National Scholastic Indoor Championship held at the Armory in New York. The 4x8 team should have an excellent shot at improving on their time of 8:01 from States with the high level of competition and fast track. They will be shooting for sub-7:57.

Also going on this weekend is the World Indoor Championships in Moscow, Russia.

If you are nearby these areas, take some time to cheer on the athletes, they would greatly appreciate it. I will try to get video of Rick's and Katherine's races at Nike Indoor Nationals. Best of luck to all.
